BROWSER INTEGRATION QUESTIONS

Q. I cannot integrate IDM into my Opera (or Mozilla, Netscape, FireFox, Firebird) browser. Does Internet Download Manager take over downloads from these browsers?

Internet Download Manager supports all these browsers. Please note that you may need to enable "Use advanced browser integration" option in order to use IDM with Mozilla or Opera browsers.? If it doesn?t help, please check that NPIDMan1.dll and NPIDMan2.dll files exist in "\Plugins" subfolder ("Program\Plugins\" for Opera) of Mozilla root folder. If these files do not exist, please download them from the links above and place them to the browser Plugins folder. Make sure that corresponding "Integrate IDM into browsers" box is checked for your browser in IDM Options->General. For older versions of Opera browser, you may need to select preferences in "Opera->File->Preferences->Multimedia->Find_plug-ins..."

Q. IDM tries to download some files each time I launch Internet Explorer (or while starting my computer) even if I press "cancel"

Probably some Internet Application on your computer tries to download these files, and IDM catches these downloads. IDM does not know where to put these downloads, or how to install them. The Internet Application may notice that these files are not there where they should be, and tries to download them again. To solve this problem, please look what server IDM tries to download from, and add this server to the list of exceptions in "Options->General" dialog.

QUESTIONS ABOUT DOWNLOADING WITH IDM

Q. I cannot download a file without using IDM. IDM download dialog always pops up even if I exit IDM. What should I do?

If you want to disable IDM temporarily for a single download, you may hold down the Alt key while clicking on a download link to prevent IDM from taking over the download. Note that holding the Alt key allows your browser download the file. You can customize this key by using Keys button in IDM Options->General. You may also delete this file type from "automatically start" list in "Options->General" dialog. Or you may add this site to the list of exceptions in the same dialog.

Q. I want to disable downloading with IDM. How do I do this?

If you don't want IDM to take over any downloads from a browser, turn off the browser integration in IDM options. After turning off/on the browser integration in "IDM Options->General", don't forget to restart the browser.

Q. Internet Download Manager doesn't take over the download from MSN Explorer. What is wrong?

Make sure that "Integrate into Microsoft Internet Explorer" box is checked in IDM Options->General. Also IDM icon should remain in the system tray if you want it to take over downloads from MSN Explorer or Internet Explorer based browsers.

Q. Internet Download Manager doesn't take over a download. What is wrong?

IDM takes over a download if its type matches the list of types or extensions. You may edit the list of extensions in "IDM Options->General". If it doesn't help, try to hold down the CTRL key while clicking the download link.

Q. My download speed in IDM is not very high. How can I improve it?

Please try to select a high bandwidth connection type in "Options->Connection" dialog. You may also try to play with "Default max conn. number parameter" in the same dialog. It should raise your speed. Please also note that the download speed strongly depends on the server you are downloading from and on your current network conditions.

Q. I added a password for a site in "Options->Sites Logins" dialog, but IDM does not use it when I try to download from this site.

Please check that you selected an appropriate protocol for your URL in "Options->Sites Logins" dialog. Please note that a download may have a different URL than the basic server. For example, you browse the site "http://www.mysite.com" but all its downloads come from "http://members.mysite.com". Please add the correct server name to site logins list. If it doesn?t solve your problem, try to use wildcards in URL like "*mystie.com"..

Q. IDM tries to download Windows updates. How to disable this?

Please try to set/add the following value for the exclude list in "Options->General" dialog: *.update.microsoft.com *download.windowsupdate.com

Q. IDM downloaded a file but cannot rebuild temporary chunks. What should I do?

Usually this error occurs when a temporary file is being used by some other application. It may be some antiviral software or a file viewer. Please try to restart your computer, and then resume the download. In most cases, IDM will rebuild the temporary files. If it doesn?t help, please look for the download log file, and send it to us for analysis.

Q. I get a memory allocation error when IDM tries to rebuild temporary chunks. What should I do?

Please update to the latest version. Please try to restart your computer, and resume the download. After that in most cases, IDM will rebuild all temporary files.

Q. I have problems with downloading files from Rapidshare.com. IDM downloads HTML pages instead of real files. Is there any way to solve your problem?

Please try to go to Rapidshare.com, log into the Premium Zone and check the box for Direct Download. Our users who had similar problems reported that this helped them.

Q. I have premium account on megaupload.com, but when I right click on a download link and choose "Download with IDM", IDM downloads an html page. How can I download files on megaupload.com with Internet Download Manager directly?

1. Add new login information line for http://*megaupload.com to IDM Options->Site Logins. You should use the asterisk at the beginning of the site name because there are redirects to different sub domains on the site. Select "http://", type "*megaupload.com", your user name, and your password on the "Site login" Megaupload dialog.

2. Turn on "Direct download" option in your account settings on megaupload.com site. You can do it on "Transfer settings" dialog. See picture.

When direct download option is turned on, it's not necessary to download with IDM using "download with IDM" popup menu item in the browser. IDM should take over the download automatically when you click on its download link. If IDM has not taken over the download and a standard browser download dialog appeared, you should check the extension in the list of automatically downloaded file types in IDM "Options->File Types" dialog. For example you can come across files like filename.zip.001, filename.zip.002, and etc. In this case you should add 0* (zero followed by an asterisk) to the list of file types to start downloading automatically in Options->File Types.

CONFIGURATION QUESTIONS

Q. I selected a folder where to put my downloads, but IDM still puts them in a different folder. What am I doing wrong?

Please note that IDM has download categories to organize your downloads. Each category has its own download path. You should set the path for each category. Use "Options->Downloads" dialog and select a category in the drop down list. If you do not want to use categories, just delete them - right click on the category name in the main dialog and select "Delete" from the popup menu.

Q. I do not know what file to use for my antivirus in "Options->Downloads" dialog.

Usually you should use the same executable file that you are using when you launch your virus scanner from your "Windows Start->Programs" menu. Right click on its shortcut icon in the menu and select "Properties" from the popup menu. Then notice what executable file was set in "Target" field. Open "IDM Options->Downloads" dialog. You need to provide the full path to your virus scanner executable file in "Virus scanner program" field in "Options->Downloads" dialog. Then type command line options in the field below. Replace file name in the command line with "[File]" parameter. For example, for Norton Antivirus you should type "C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NAVW32.EXE" in "Virus scanner program" field and "[File] /s" in "command line parameter".

GENERAL QUESTIONS

Q. I have problems with uninstall. What should I do?

More than 100,000 registered users enjoy using IDM! Please take a look at user opinions. If you still want to uninstall IDM, refer to Windows documentation to see how to uninstall programs. Usually you should go to Control Panel, Add/Remove programs. Uninstall is 100% working. If you have problems with removing an older version of IDM, downloads and run this program to remove the integration into browsers. Then just delete IDM folder.

Q. My Internet Download Manager cannot connect to the Internet after version update (or after the purchase of the full version), and I cannot download anything. I get the following messages "The requested server name is valid, but it does not have the correct associated data being resolved for. (The host itself exists, but is not directly reachable)", "Cannot find server" or "Cannot connect to the server".

Please check that your Internet connection is active. Such problem also occurs when you use a firewall on your computer. After update or installation of a new version, the size of IDM executable file changes. Most firewalls check file sizes of Internet applications, because a trojan program can replace the application, and get Internet access. Probably when you were updating IDM, its executable file size changed, and your Firewall blocked Internet Download Manager.
If you have a firewall installed, please ensure that IDM has appropriate Internet access rights.
If you have Norton Internet Security installed, please try to remove IDM rule in NIS (Norton Internet Security) completely. Many users had problems with existing rules. You should select Personal Firewall tab, then go to Internet Access Control, find Internet Download Manager, and remove this rule. When IDM will try to download a file, NIS ask a question again and you should click on Yes/Permit.

Q. I have a conflict between IDM and Google Search Desktop. What should I do to install and run IDM and Google Search Desktop at the same time?

Thank you for reporting the problem. We have already investigated this problem and found out that this was the fault of Google software. For some reason it declares all other application that use Service Provide Interface technology as conflicting applications, and refuses to install itself. In fact IDM does not really have any conflicts with Google Search Desktop. And you may easily verify it.
In order to install Google Search Desktop, please disable advanced browser integration in IDM "Options->General" dialog, then install Google Search Desktop and enable advanced integration back. On each run Google Search Desktop shows a message about a conflict with IDM, but nevertheless it works without any problems. Note that the current version of Google Search Desktop is a beta version, and many bugs are yet to be fixed. Google team promised us to fix this conflict in one of its future releases of Google Search Desktop. We have already contacted Google about this problem, and received a reply that the fix for Internet Download Manager should be available as soon as possible. You may also try to contact Google yourself in order to resolve this problem.

Q. After I have installed IDM I cannot access the Internet, or some of my Internet Applications do not work properly.

The advanced browser integration of IDM may have a conflict with another Internet application on your computer. You should try to turn off "Use advanced browser integration" option in "Options->General" dialog. This will return the basic browser integration from 3.xx versions which should not cause any conflicts. Please use "Help->Quick Update" menu item in order to get the latest version.

Q. My Antivirus/Spyware remover software tells that IDM idmmkb.dll file listens for keyboard and may be a threat to my computer. Please explain this situation.

The purpose of this file is to check the state of Alt and Ctrl key pressed/released events only. Windows OS delivers key press events to an active window process, but IDM needs to know this state independently. That is why it's necessary to hook this dll in the message chain. And that is the only purpose. If you have knowledge, you may disassemble this dll and verify for yourself that it's true.

Q. Microsoft Antispyware says that IDM adds a new Winsocks LSP (layered service provider) 'idmmbc.dll' which can monitor network data, and may be a spyware. Is Idmmbc.dll a spyware?

Microsoft Antispyware is in beta testing, and it doesn't recognize bad and good LSPs yet. It says the same for every LSP that other program install, for example for Google desktop search, or ZoneAlarm suite.
idmmbc.dll is related to advanced browser integration. This is the feature of Internet Download Manage, not available in other download managers. This dll listens to download requests from any application of your choice. Once it notices the request, it takes over the download. This way IDM captures almost 100% of links from any browser or even any Internet application. You can choose from what applications IDM should capture links in IDM options -> General tab.
Idmmbc.dll is a layer service provider that catches download clicks, and feeds them to IDM for downloading. That's the usual task being performed by download managers. Idmmbc.dll doesn't have any malicious code, and doesn't execute any Trojan functions. This dll has nothing to do with Trojans, Spyware, Adware, Viruses, and such. You may check that it's true with any spyware removal tool, including Microsoft Antispyware full system scan.
This feature can be turned off in IDM Options. You will need to reboot your computer to remove the LSP from the chain. You should never delete this file manually when the feature is turned on, because the chain may become broken, and all Internet programs may stop working. To uninstall this dll always use the checkbox in IDM options -> General tab.
The only risk of using this feature is that it may cause conflicts with malware LSPs from 3rd party software vendors which cannot work in LSP chain correctly. They either don't allow layering itself in a chain, or can't layer other LSPs correctly. Note that you may turn the advanced browser integration off afterwards when you encounter a problem, or uninstall the conflicting LSP.
If you are using Internet Explorer mainly, you don't need advanced browser integration. The basic integration for Internet Explorer has all the same advanced features.
